8 reasons why you should include pumpkin seeds in your dog’s diet

The humble pumpkin seed offers a treasure trove of nutritional benefits when it comes to the health and wellbeing of our pets.  Discover all about their goodness then consider grinding a few up and adding them to your pet’s diet.

  1. FIBRE RICH

Pumpkin seed is a soluble fibre which can help to slow digestion, absorb water if mild diarrhoea is a problem, and even help resolve mild constipation.

Pumpkin seed fibre bulks up the stool which helps to promote normal anal gland expression and prevent them from becoming impacted or infected. In cats, pumpkin seeds may also help with hairball problems, as the added pumpkin seed fibre can help pass hair through the digestive tract.

Adding pumpkin seed fibre to your pet’s diet can also help your pet feel fuller and therefore may assist with weight loss.

  1. OMEGA FATTY ACIDS

Omega fatty acids are essential for healthy skin, joint function, heart health, and brain chemistry; and adding a rich plant-based omega fatty acid source like the pumpkin seed fibre can help maintain the health of your pet by providing those benefits.

  1. ANTI-INFLAMMATORY PROPERTIES

Ground up pumpkin seeds have been shown to have anti-inflammatory benefits for anal gland disease and intestinal health, which can help with irritation, inflammation, and pain relief.

  1. ALLERGIES

Pumpkin seeds are loaded with magnesium, which can help to relax respiratory muscles and open up airways.

  1. PARASITES

Intestinal parasites can further complicate any intestinal or anal gland issues. Pumpkin seed fibre contains Cucurbitin, which is an amino acid that can act as a natural de-worming agent.  While your dog or cat is likely to need addition de-worming support, pumpkin seeds can help to keep your pet parasite free and decrease intestinal inflammation.

  1. VITAMINS AND MINERALS

Pumpkin seeds contain Vitamin A to support vision health, Vitamin C to help boost the immune system and support joint health, and Zinc which can help improve skin and hair coat and provide immune system support.

  1. ANTIOXIDANTS

Pumpkin seeds contain high levels of beta-carotene and Vitamin E, powerful anti-oxidants which can help to help slow the aging process.

  1. OILS

Oils found in the pumpkin seed are also believed to help support urinary health

How much is enough?

While the benefits of adding pumpkin seeds to your pet’s diet are numerous, it's important to give the correct amount. Too little will have negligible effects, while too much can upset the digestive tract.

1 ground-up pumpkin seed per 4-5kg body weight per day is thought to be a safe amount.

Preparation: Pumpkin seeds can be consumed raw but are better dry roasted and ground. Avoid salting or adding oils to them.
