Hairballs: Normal or Not? | Full Vet Session with Dr Heidi

We're thrilled to share expert insights from our vet, Dr. Heidi, as she dives into a topic every cat parent should know about: hairballs and digestive health in cats 😺 This complete video is now available to watch right here on our website!

Hairballs are a normal part of cat life, but they're not always just hairballs. Dr. Heidi explains that an occasional hairball every few weeks is nothing to worry about. If they start showing up weekly, though, it's time to ask why your cat is grooming so much.

She also shares why cats are what she calls "closet sickies": they often hide being unwell until they're quite sick. That makes knowing the signs all the more important.

In this session, Dr. Heidi covers:

  • Why cats get hairballs, and how often is normal
  • How grooming habits, itchy skin and stress can lead to more hairballs
  • How to tell a true hairball from retching or vomiting with another cause

How to Support Your Cat's Digestive Health

  • Keep them hydrated: Fresh water and moist food (rather than dry biscuits) help keep swallowed hair moving through the gut.
  • Brush regularly: Every bit of fur you brush out is fur your cat doesn't swallow. Be extra gentle with mats, and never use scissors!
  • Feed for a healthy gut and coat: Species-appropriate protein, the right fibre, omega-3s and gut-loving support like Moggy Daily all help keep things moving smoothly.
