The Scoop on Poop | Full Vet Session with Dr Heidi

We’re thrilled to share expert insights from our vet, Dr. Heidi, as she dives into a topic every dog parent should know about: reading your dog’s poop 💩 This complete video is now available to watch right here on our website!

Many dog parents scoop and move on without a second glance, but your dog’s poop is one of the best at-home health checks you have. It can flag a problem on the inside before your dog looks unwell on the outside.

In this full video, Dr. Heidi walks through what a healthy poop looks like, the colour red flags that mean it’s time to see the vet, and how to change your dog’s diet without upsetting their gut.

In this session, Dr. Heidi covers:

  • What a healthy poop should look like: moist but firm, chocolate brown, and holding its shape when picked up. She also covers how raw-fed and kibble-fed dogs differ.
  • The colour red flags to watch for, from bright red blood and black tar-like stool to grey, crumbly, bright yellow or orange poop
  • Why diet changes upset some dogs more than others, explained through her “apartment block” analogy for the gut microbiome

How to Support Your Dog’s Gut Health
Dr. Heidi also shares practical guidance to help you keep an eye on your dog’s gut:

  • Make a daily poo check part of your routine. Colour, shape and consistency all matter, and texture tells you as much as colour does.
  • Go slow with any change, whether that’s a new food or adding Doggy Daily. Start at around a third of the usual amount, build up gradually, and watch their poop as you go.
  • If something looks off, take a photo or bring a fresh sample to your vet. It helps them get to the bottom of things faster.

This video is packed with expert advice on what your dog’s poop is telling you. It covers why it’s such a powerful daily health check, the colours that mean “call the vet”, and how to transition your dog’s diet the right way. Dr. Heidi also explains why dogs fed the same food every day can take longer to adjust to change.
